SUBMISSIONS NOW OPEN!

In Vivo accepts original submissions of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, opinion pieces, and art that relate to the study and/or practice of medicine. We are in search of creative, innovative voices from from all backgrounds and communities.

This year’s theme is questions. As medical students, we often turn to the scientific method as a way to ask and answer questions. But as humans and artists, we may also turn to art as a way to explore questions and communicate our own answers–whether it’s listening to a song in a time of distress, looking at a favorite piece of art in a new light, or writing as a way to understand one’s own emotions.

In this issue, we encourage submitters from all backgrounds to reflect on the question their work aims to answer–from “what was my grandma’s favorite song?” to “what does it mean to watch someone die?”.

Along with your work’s title in our Table of Contents, we will include your work’s question in a “Table of Questions” in this issue, meant to provide an additional way to enjoy our issue. We hope this will be an opportunity for your own self-reflection, as well as a way to convey to readers what your work aims to explore.

The submission window is now closed for our 2024 issue.

Submission Information

We are currently accepting submissions for our 2024 edition. You will be notified regarding your application status by late May. An editor will reach out to you directly via email notifying you of your piece’s status and next steps. You can expect your submission to be either: 1) accepted; 2) conditionally accepted with revisions; 3) declined. In the case of conditional acceptance, feedback will be provided if you would like to make additional edits and resubmit. Pieces may be declined after resubmission following the editing process.

Please read carefully our Submission Guidelines to the right for information on the different submission types. Submissions that do not follow these guidelines will not be considered. Please refer to the In Vivo style guide for additional information about formatting, grammar, and conventions.

Here are some general tips:

  • for written works, use the font “Times New Roman,” size 12 pt., double-spaced (exempting poetry). Submit as a Microsoft Word file (.doc or .docx), NOT as a .pdf

  • for your work type, check the guidelines on the right for specific information on formatting, length, and file type

  • citations (if applicable) can be any format initially - we may ask you to change them later as needed

  • submissions are limited to 10MB in size; for visual/auditory/video works, please submit a portion/version that best represents it, and we will reach out to you for a full version

We welcome simultaneous submissions, but ask that you please inform us at hmsinvivo@gmail.com as soon as your piece is accepted elsewhere. In order to ensure patient privacy and confidentiality, contributors should submit work that is compliant with the guidelines in the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

When you’re ready, you can submit your work here.
